This exhibition marked the launch of a cycle of three exhibitions on a range of subjects covered by the Generali Foundation Collection. As part of a larger project, the intention was to reflect on and sustainably deepen the examination of art from Central Eastern Europe on several levels.
Sharpened by post-colonial discourses, the ideas of the relationship of the West to the East have also changed. Some of the Generali Foundation’s exhibitions have already addressed important topics in this regard and presented works by artists from Central Eastern Europe. The exhibition COLLECTED VIEWS FROM EAST OR WEST once again posed the question of difference and interaction. Contrary to the common polarization of East and West, the reciprocal relationships and the parallel artistic developments were emphasized. In line with the Generali Foundation program, the focus was on art from the 1960s and 1970s—happenings, actions, performance and conceptual art as well as film, video and photography. Significant works by artists from countries of the former Eastern Bloc entered into a dialog with recent acquisitions from the collection.
